Located in the same Kansai region as Kyoto and Kobe, Osaka is the business capital of central/western Japan. In the old days, Osaka was the nexus for trade, and it’s canals were THE place where a vast amount of rice and other foodstuffs would travel though to get all over Japan.

Osaka is the big city in the region, with a variety of shops and restaurants comparable to Tokyo. In many ways Osaka is the Chicago to Tokyo’s New York. A midwestern city with it’s own regional accent, foods and a baseball team that historically wasn’t very successful (though the Cubs broke that last year) all Osaka is missing is deep dish pizzas.

Architecturally, Osaka (like many Japanese cities that were bombed during the war) is undistinguished with many concrete and glass skyscrapers. The real interesting parts can be found in the shopping streets and alleys.


Tsutenkaku tower is a iconic Osaka landmark, a postwar recreation of a tower built in the 20s.

The giant wire frame fish is an ad for a local Fugu (poisonous blowfish) restaurant


Kushi-katsu (stick fry) is a classic Osaka dish. It consists of various meats and vegetables impaled on a stick, coated in a batter and breadcrumbs, then deep fried.

Later in the day, I walked down to the major shopping district by the Dotonbori canals.


This area is home to some fantastic large size displays, similar to Times square in NYC. Like in Chicago, there are frequent tour boats that go on sightseeing trips though the canals.

Osaka is a fun town, lots to do and see, but a little more laid back than Tokyo. The food is excellent and it’s close to other major tourist destinations in Japan. Highly recommended if you travel to Japan.

Oda here, reporting from a land far far away. After a few days of rain and even some snow, the weather has cleared and I can leave the protective safety of the bunker.

For the first leg of my 6 month stay in Japan, my destination was Niigata.

Niigata, Japan is a city located on the Japan seaside to the north of Tokyo. An agricultural powerhouse, this region is known for pure water, and excellent growing conditions for rice and produce.

I was fortunate enough to sample these during my time there, enjoying the hospitality of the folks I was homestaying with. The rice and the miso (soybean paste) was delicious! One of the highlights of the homestay was the tasty sukiyaki stew with Takayama wagyu beef. This region is known for having even tastier meat than Kobe beef!

There wasn’t too much of the seaside to see in the middle of winter, but I did get to go down to the middle of Niigata city and check out the New Year’s festival at the Hakusan Shrine. In Japanese culture New Years is held during the solar calendar, with activities taking place on Dec. 31st and January 1st.

Amatsu’s Kapha filled field map is based on the layout of a traditional Japanese shinto shrine. At a shinto shrine, you can purchase all sorts of charms and objects to bring you good luck in the new year. Purchase a fortune and if you don’t like it, tie it to the branch of a nearby tree!

The place has the air of a summertime festival. The specialty of Niigata is “Popoyaki” with “po-po” being the sound of steam puffing away as the pancake-like treat cooks.

Except for the cold, Niigata was the perfect place to spend a first New Year’s in Japan.

ANA is always the best airline to fly with if you’re going to Japan. It’s not always the cheapest option, and the seat amenities aren’t spectacular but the food is always good

I’ll post up some more photos, unfortunately the real photo I wanted to take was of the glittering lights on my second flight-a small prop powered plane that flew me from Tokyo to the Northern town of Niigata in the darkness and cold of night.

It was a beautiful sight that was understandably difficult to snap a shot of. The plane was flying low enough for the 1 hour long ride that you could see the individual headlights of the cars below.

[Monthly Event] Town Spotlights

Every month, we have a special event where we give a boost to the experience, drops and spawn amounts of monsters in a particular town. This usually means doubling the exp you get when you kill monsters from that town’s field and dungeon maps. In months where the spotlight is on a town that does not exist on Classic Pre-Renewal, we spotlight a separate town there.

Through the years we have had contests and events where members of the community could write or propose quests, which we put into the game.

[Event]Granny Boxter Random item Turn In NPC

This NPC can be found in the Eden Group. She will take items from the most recent random lucky box and give Brownie Points. These Brownie Points can be traded in for additional Lucky Boxes. She updates her list of acceptable items about a week after a new Lucky Box is implemented. This is a way for you to trade in unwanted items from the Lucky Boxes in order to get another chance at an item you might like more!

[Event]Jumping Janeway Leveling Quest

This NPC can be found in the Asgard Training Village on Classic Server and in Izlude on Renewal. She gives a series of quests that will level you to level 70 on Classic and 99 on Renewal, as well as providing consumable supplies and gear that are very useful when you’re getting started out.

We took a day trip up to the Danish themed town of Solvang. If you’re in California around Santa Barbara, it’s well worth checking out. With the expert editing of Ms Buttercup, the video shows parallels between the Schwartzwald Republic town of Hugel and Solvang.

Some notes on the town: The pastry that CM Maridah is eating midway through the video is an aebleskiver. It’s cooked in a special griddle and filled with jam.

Lots of businesses in the town close in the early afternoon on weekdays so unless you’re coming on the weekends you may want to get there early.

Items that cannot be transferred to iRO

-MVP Cards: if they are carded into an equipment they will be removed but the equipment will not be destroyed.

-God items

-God item pieces

-Sealed cards

-Bloody Dead Branch

-Cash shop boxes (for example Battle Manual Box, Giant Fly Wing Box, Red Glasses Box, Stat Food boxes)

This restriction is in place because the contents for these boxes may be different on our service. You can open the boxes to transfer them over. 

-KVM Points and KVM Badges

– +20 Stat foods

-Angeling, Deviling, Ghostring card

-Convex Mirrors

-Lotto Balls

-Monster Power Scrolls (Orc Lord Scroll, Phreeoni Scroll, etc.)

-Big Bun, Pill

-Enhanced Monster Cards (Enhanced Byorgue, Enhanced Maya Purple, etc.)

-Blessed Ores (Blessed Oridecon, Blessed Oridecon)

Due to the difference in over upgrading items on pRO and iRO, high upgraded items (+20, +15, etc.) will be reduced when they come to our server. This is to be fair for players on the new server we are setting up. Since they will be using iRO mechanics it would not be fair for players to come over with upgrades that new players on the server would never be able to obtain. 

There are likely more items that will be added to this list as we gather feedback from pRO players about possibly problematic items. We appreciate your patience and enthusiasm for RO and are working to make the transition as smooth as we can! We have requested item data for items that pRO has that iRO does not like the newer monster cards (Soheon, Engkanto Card, etc.) and headgears (Poring Sunglasses, Costume Lady Tanee Doll hat) so these will work when the accounts are moved to our server. It is very likely that there will be a limit on the size of stacks of items that can be brought over as well.

2/26 Update: We have a more detailed list for items that will not be transferred over.

I had a very nice break, got to do some family road tripping to San Diego and San Francisco, and along the way got to see the northernmost and southernmost Historic Tiki Bars in California.

The Tonga Room is located in the basement of a beautiful old hotel on Nob Hill in SF, built out of the hotel’s old pool room. The centerpiece of the restaurant is a large “lagoon” made out of the old pool. A live band plays from a floating platform in the middle, and there are indoor thunderstorms every 30 minutes or so. Though it’s pretty pricey as Tiki Bars go, this place has a lot of vintage charm and solid drinks.

Another great destination in San Francisco for Tiki (which wasn’t the only thing on the trip, I swear!) is the de Young art museum in Golden Gate Park. This museum has an excellent collection of authentic Polynesian carvings and real tikis.

The Japanese garden at Golden Gate Park is another fun diversion. It was choked to the gills with other tourists and a little pricey to get into but there are some old buildings and architectural features that date back to the 1915 World’s Fair.

Also, took a separate day trip last weekend to see the Bali Hai, a San Diego Tiki Bar that celebrated their 60th anniversary last year. More reasonably priced than San Francisco, the drinks were pretty good and despite not having Crab Rangoon on the menu it was still a good time.

One of my interests is Jewish-American culture/food/music of the early 20th century so I picked up a bit through high school and college.

This ancient holiday celebrates a successful armed revolt against the Greek Empire, and of the miraculous oil that burned for 8 days and nights. Though not a major holiday on the scale of Passover, it has become a important winter tradition in the United States. It’s celebrated by children with a wooden top (dreidel) emblazoned with Hebrew letters that stand for Nun, Gimel, Hei, Shin which means נס גדול היה שם “A great miracle happened there”. It’s also associated with chocolate coins (gelt) and lots of food friend in oil. A lovely and very old custom!

For this week’s recipe, I’ll be making up some delicious potato latkes to show during the stream, with sour cream and applesauce. You wouldn’t think that a fried potato pancake wouldn’t go well with something sweet like applesauce but it’s surprisingly tasty!
