Aloha everyone! After a busy weekend (and busy Monday) we’re going to be doing a Q&A and hangout on Classic server this Tuesday at 3pm.

Why not chill out this TT with the music of Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar from the Disneyland Resort? A mix of older and newer Exotica tracks, this soundtrack is one of the most impressive parts of the bar experience. Trader Sam’s is one of the very few tiki bars that still plays Exotica music, I would highly recommend going there if you find yourself near Disneyland!

I’m going to use Tiki Tuesday thread as a sort of spotlight for the best stuff from the community, so if there are some things you particularly enjoyed from that week, let me know!

Thread of the Week:

The Headgear Creation Event planned by Cinquine and Myzery was a huge hit, with some fantastic headgears from RO making their real-life debut!

Pic of the Week:

This was the second place entry for our Halloween Loading Screen event and lots of fun. The expressions of the players and the stylized monsters in the background really sell the vibe of the season!

Also since I oftentimes focus too narrowly on the drawn art from the community make sure to check out ShamStalin’s music thread! Shammy’s singing covers of songs as well as original compositions.

For example: Level cap raise, gunslinger or other upcoming updates are not yet on the radar for iRO just yet. We’ll have news up as soon as we receive more data from kRO’s development team.

Otherwise ask away, if you want to know how we started in the games industry, what kind of things we do on an everyday basis or even ask what kind of things we’re looking forward to seeing at E3, we’ll do our best to answer ‘em. Also, ask STAR TREK QUESTIONS, as both Campitor and I are fans.

This week we’re serving up a cruiser full of trek-related goodness and remembering one of the greatest things ever to exist in Las Vegas.

For this week’s choice of music: a suite of sweet Trek songs:

For this week’s Drink we raise a toast to the dearly departed Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas (which sadly I never was able to visit) and the truly out-of-this-world Quark’s Bar. http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_The_Experience

Named after the famous pleasure planet where some of the worst episodes of TNG/DS9 take place, the RISA COLADA is our recipe of the week, and tiki as all get out. Check out the link above for many more recipes!

======Risa Colada======

1.5 oz Malibu Rum (or whichever coconut rum you can find)
2 oz Pina Colada mix (liquid mix, not powder)
.5 oz Blue Curaco
2 oz scoop of ice cream

Put the rum, pina colada mix, and ice cream in a blender with about a half cup of ice and blend until smooth (add more ice if necessary). In an empty glass, pour the .5 oz of blue curaco. Finally, slowly and gently pour the frozen concoction into the glass with the curaco to get that swirreled effect. Top with whipped cream if so desired.

Album of the week: Mitch Murder’s Burning Chrome. Named for William Gibson’s short story, this is a NewRetroWave that channels the electronic sound of Vangelis and the driving synth beats found in the background music of a lot of 80s films. It’s the perfect music for driving around a neon-lit city or darkened highway at night.

Tiki recipe of the week:

Planter’s Punch (Don the Beachcomber)
This is one of the great recipes re-discovered by Beachbum berry for his book Intoxica. The only ingredient’s you’ll really need to hunt around for are the falernum, but you can pick some up at Amazon.

1/2 oz lime juice
1/2 oz sugar syrup (or swap out agave syrup)
1/2 oz gold rum (Jamaican)
1/2 oz Dark Jamaican Rum
1 oz gold virgin islands rum
1/2 teaspoon grenadine
1/2 teaspoon falernum
2 dashes angostura bitters
3/4 cup crushed ice

blend for 5 seconds on high and pour into a tall glass. Fill with more ice to fill.
Questions about the game, behind the scenes, what it’s like to work in the games industry or just what our favorite stuff with are questions we’d be happy to answer! Check out previous threads if you think that your question may have been answered before too!

Today we look at one of the lost shrines to the Tiki Gods, one that once lived not too far away: Monterey Park’s THE TIKIS. Where today lives a Storage complex and a Mexican American restaurant, once lived a Grand Retronesian Experience courtesy of master showman Danny Balsz:

• 12 Acres of Tropical Enchantment
• 50 feet of underground lava tubes
• 80 foot erupting volcano
• Waterfalls, lagoons, jungle trails
• 3 to 7 bands
• POLYNESIAN EXTRAVAGANZA featuring the finest of Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and New Zealand.
• Accommodates to 5000 persons, 18 acres of parking
• Complete year round banquet facilities
• Private facilities for birthday parties
• We specialize in holiday parties
• Sundays bring the kids
• 12 exciting rides, petting zoo
• Polynesian cultural center of the islands
• Train ride through ½ mile of Polynesian settings and monster caves

All kinds of weird, kitschy stuff to do here, including a “200 foot underground cave” tour and beautiful “tiki maidens”.

Eventually, his neighbors in sleepy Monterey Park convinced the city to kick this rocking hula celebration out of town. By the time Danny had found a new place in Lake Elsinore in the 70s, the Tiki Craze had sadly passed. Though the Tikis is gone, it’s still remembered by a generation of tiki-philes as one of the greatest mainland luaus ever built.

Album of the week: Since we can’t legally Listen to this while we do the broadcast! Travel back in time with the Ship of Imagination and sit beneath the giant working volcano while sipping a Tropical Itch Cocktail.

TROPICAL ITCH

8 oz passion fruit juice or nectar (I use Hawaiian Sun for that)
1 1/2 oz 151 proof rum
1 oz dark Jamaican Rum
1 oz Bourbon
1/2 oz orange Curacao
2 dashes Angostura Bitters

Fill a large hurricane glass with crushed ice, add all ingredients, and swizzle until well chilled. Garnish with a pineapple stick, mint sprig, an orchid, and a wooden backscratcher. Original recipe by Harry Yee of the Hawaiian Village Hotel in Hawaii.
This week we have a cocktail from the Legendary Trader Vic Begeron, the Trader Vic Grog

This is a pretty simple to make cocktail, with a little juice and two shots of rum.

Juice of 1 lemon

1 oz unsweetened pineapple juice

1 oz passion fruit syrup

1 dash Angostura bitters

2 oz dark Jamaican rum

Shake with plenty of crushed ice, pour into a short glass, garnish with mint

Album of the week is perhaps the best jumping off point to appreciation of the Exotica genre of music, Martin Denny’s Quiet Village LP. Recorded in stero, this 1959 record has two of my favorite Exotica songs, Tune From Rangoon and Quiet Village. Both of these capture the exotic feel of a faraway place that only existed in these tunes. You could easily imagine sipping a Mai Ta’i while a house band plays in the background.

RO can be a bit lonely when you’re just starting out as a novice if you don’t know anyone, so playing with people watching the stream has been a lot of fun. Still getting stuff figured out as far as software, overlays and such that most LPers probably know quite a bit about but we’re getting caught up (slowly).
We’ll be doing this show every Friday (unless there’s a holiday) at 5pm so check it out! I am hoping to get set up for call-in guests over skype and the like as we continue.

Someday I want to get to this level of production and banter
